Balancing Faith and Music Isn’t Easy—That’s Why It’s a Career Game Changer

With close to 400 women at out Benefit Concert, we successfully raised a nice chuck of change for the women of AVIV! This money will provide assistance with medical expenses, transportation to and from chemo and radiation treatments, babysitting and housekeeping, individual and family counseling, etc. The best part about it was that it was truly the highlight of my career- seeing so much support and solidarity, performing with other talented women who invested timeless hours rehearsing and getting all the positive feedback. I can honestly say “It’s the least I can do- sing a couple tunes- it was a pleasure!”

I’m very excited to be organizing a benefit concert.
Aviv is a new support group for Jewish women of Passaic Clifton diagnosed with advanced stage cancer and their families. They offer a support group for the women, their husbands and we are about to start an art therapy group to address the needs of their children.
Cancer is a disease that touches many people. Today, almost everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer affects not just the individual with the diagnosis, but the entire family and the community. Mothers undergoing chemotherapy are unable to manage their households and their husbands must do “double duty” as both the provider and the caregiver. One can well imagine the strain this can put on a family.
As a community, we have the opportunity to help these women and their families. On Wednesday June 16, 2010 an evening of music and laughter to benefit the women who are part of Aviv will be presented. “ Kol B’ramah nishmah- A Voice on High is heard” under the auspices of Bikor Cholim of Passaic/Clifton. Ladies will have the pleasure of listening to Aliza Dubin, Andrea Eller and myself, Miriam Sandler, with divrei chizuck being given by Rebbetzins Bayla Stern and Chana Frumet Stern. All proceeds will be used to provide respite care and support for women of Aviv. The doors will open at 7:45 p.m. and the concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concert will be held at Bais Shalom Hall, 733 Passaic Avenue, Clifton, NJ. An acquaintance who heard my CD approached me one day with wide eyes explaining how, after all these years of knowing me, she never knew I could sing or that I was a songwriter. She was deeply moved by my decision to perform exclusively for women and proceeded to tell me what a sacrifice it is to “save” my talent as I do now for appropriate venues. I very franking told her what I say at most of my concerts- IT’S NOT A SACRIFICE. I don’t feel like I gave up anything, rather I gained more than I could ever describe. Singing for a mixed audience is a totally different experience from what I have now on stage. Now I feel privileged to perform meaningful songs with deep messages and touch the audience on a soul level. Now my performances are holy and honest. Now I feel like a Queen whose beauty shines from the inside out. Now I know I’m blessed because I’m doing what I was intended to do with my musical gifts and am respected my women and men alike, more than I would ever be in my “past life”. I look back on my career with gratitude for having been chosen to develop my talents but I walk away with peace because what I have now is endlessly more valuable than what I had before. Before I had superficial, deceitful relationships. Now I have depth and trust. Before I felt attractive but only for the external beauty I had to offer. Now my beauty is far more powerful as it comes from within and fuels my external appearance. Before I lived a facade that shimmered with lies and egos. Now my clarity reveals the truth and I’m unaffected by the glaamour! Now I connect with women and inspire them to grow and change for the good as they know they should. Now I feel safe, protected and at peace knowing that all that happens is for the good and has been orchestrated by The Creator. So, when I’m told by fans that it’s such a sacrifice to “give up” my career to start a family and perform exclusively for women, I very calmly answer, it was no sacrifice. It was like giving up a grain of sand for all the beaches in the world.

I’m honored to announce my most recent video presentation was filmed a couple weeks ago and will, G-d willing, be shown in over 100 cities throughout the world. It was produced by a Jewish Women’s organization, Bnos Melochim, that concentrates on inspiring women to behave and present themselves modestly. This is a topic that is dear to me as it’s enabled me to deeply transformed as a person and I feel that all women need constant reminders to stay “on track”.
In a world where everything that’s external is worshipped and women are constantly objectified, I’m blessed to report I’ve found true satisfaction in my role as an orthodox woman. This was only accomplished by the life changing mitzvah (commandment) of TZNIUS.
Tznius is usually defined as “modesty” but I must add, it is a real awakening and connection with your internal/spiritual self and the Divine. Through tznius I was able to access my neshama (my soul) and begin my relationship with The Almighty. Without tznius, I was unable to tap into the holiness within.
We all have a spark of holiness within, a gift from The Creator, which enables us to have a connection with G-d. He is waiting for us all to turn to Him and see His Hand in our lives; to speak to Him; to serve Him. This is truly the only way to have a fulfilling, joyous life. A peaceful life that cannot be ROCKED with the slightest wind that blows us over or wave that crashes. As we understand G-d is holding our hand, we begin to trust Him and feel His profound presence around us. However, this can only be felt if we “walk modestly with Hashem(G-d)”; If we internalize “the glory of a princess is inward”; and “adorn ourselves with strength and majesty”. If we humble ourselves and know “I’m more than what you see”, we can perceive the depth that life has to offer.
May we turn away from the influences that prevail and search for guidance from Above. He is our Father who knows what’s best for us, more than we do. As a child trusts his parent and feels safe in his arms, may we also find that trust in The Holy One, Blessed be He.
